An Insider's Look At One Of The Most Exclusive Residential Communities In The Bahamas

Baker's Bay Golf & Ocean Club

The Bakers Bay Golf & Ocean Club, located along a stretch of private perfection on the Bahamian island of Great Guana Cay in the Abacos, is way more than just another private beach community. Sure, it boasts the requisites: fitness center, tennis and basketball courts, luxurious spa, amazing restaurants, and killer beach club stocked with every toy available. The community also has a deep-water marina where members can choose from a host of large, fast, and comfortable boats and, of course, the beaches and sunsets are amazing.

The good life in the Bahamas can be found at Baker's Bay.

But Baker’s Bay is also an exclusive members-only residential community where Tom Brady, Michael Jordan and other incredibly successful and interesting people go when they want to escape to the Bahamas. And that’s no accident.

All of Discovery Land Company’s properties (including the newly opened Silo Ridge Field Club in upstate NY, Yellowstone Club in MontanaMakena Golf & Beach Club on Maui, and others) have developed a loyal and high-profile following because the company builds exquisite homes and delivers unparalleled service in some the world’s most beautiful locations. Discovery’s philosophy—to make it easy for guests to enjoy outdoor pursuits, from golf with a pro at one of its award-winning Tom Fazio-designed courses, to skiing on their own members-only mountain—has been a huge success.

The company’s stated desire to not only build homes but to help members build lasting memories for their families sounds almost too good to be true.

But then again, I had a feeling Baker’s was going to be special from the moment the lush, green fairways of the coastline-hugging golf course came into view. I could see everything through the windshield of the Tropic Ocean Airways seaplane which was bringing us in for a landing on the calm waters of the resort’s protected bay. And being picked up by golf cart on the dock, spirited through Baker’s own customs office, and transported to our spectacular villa overlooking the 18th green and the intoxicatingly blue water of the Atlantic confirmed it. Turns out, I hadn’t seen anything yet.

Baker's Bay has it all. Boats. Golf. Beautiful homes. Lots of activities. And and a very cool community.

I enjoyed all the stuff (the pools, beaches, food, spa, boats, personalized golf carts, bikes, tennis, and even our waterfront villa) during my visit, but after navigating the golf course with Baker’s pro, Raquel, and then spending a day on a powerboat with Baker’s Bay legendary local “Papa Willie,” the simple truth is that the people are what make the place so special.

Baker's Bay is where the likes of Tom Brady and other A-Listers have homes in the Bahamas

Raquel did more than just help me with my golf swing or make me feel at home—she made me feel like family. And spending a day on the water with Papa Willie was an experience: I don’t think I’ve laughed harder, or been more touched, while on a trip. He took us to see the Abacos’ famous swimming pigs and to hand feed a graceful school of stingrays. He also brought us to his home in tiny New Plymouth on Green Turtle Cay, where he introduced us to everyone in town (including his parents) and fed us homemade egg sandwiches at New Plymouth’s “famous” Plymouth Rock Liquor Store. Nothing in the Bahamas is more exclusive than that!

Amazon HQ2 talks reportedly narrow to Crystal City, Dallas and NYC

Amazon is reportedly getting close to finalizing the location of its  $5 billion, 50,000-job  second headquarters following a nationwide reverse-contest of sorts, wherein the tech company accepted bids and presentations from different city governments on why they should be the one to land Amazon HQ2. And now it appears that three locations are currently in the lead: Virginia’s Crystal City, Dallas and New York City. After speaking to people familiar with Amazon’s plans, The Wall Street Journal reported  this weekend that the search for the second headquarters has narrowed from the 20 cities originally shortlisted as potential locations. Discussions around Denver, Toronto, Atlanta, Nashville, Tenn., and Raleigh, N.C. have cooled somewhat while Amazon’s team has been having more talks with representatives of the other three cities. Amazon’s impact on home affordability has been a major consideration, as the tech giant’s presence in Seattle has both created nume...

The Ultimate Guide To Family Law

Introduction The government has always had a fascination with families and the contract of marriage. State legislatures have passed many laws regulating the requirements for getting married and for obtaining a divorce. In addition, today’s laws also affect couples who live together outside of marriage. It is hard to give simple answers to many of the legal questions that a person may have about marriage, parenthood, separation, or divorce because the laws change and vary from one state to another. In addition, judges in different states with identical laws may decide cases with similar facts in different ways. This article describes the laws and court rulings common to most states. If you have other questions, please contact a lawyer in your state. You may also wish to contact a specialist. Many lawyers (particularly in urban areas) work only on family law or make it a large part of their general practice. Lawyers specializing in family law also may refer to themselves as specialist...

A tech millionaire wants to build a blockchain city in the desert

The desert in northwestern Nevada near Tesla’s Gigafactory is filled with sagebrush and dust, but if a cryptocurrency millionaire’s high-stakes gamble goes the way he wants the land will soon bloom into a full-blown city unlike any that has preceded it. The land includes 68,000 acres of desert near Reno. The man behind the plan is Jeffery Berns, 56, a lawyer and the founder of a company called Blockchains LLC. And the idea is to create an entirely new community, the size of a city, that is based entirely on blockchain — a kind of digital record keeping technology that is best known as the transaction ledger behind cryptocurrency Bitcoin . “We are building the world’s first smart city based on technology, from infrastructure all the way up,” Berns said Thursday in Prague during a launch event for the project. A moment later he added that, “It’s not so much a city as much as a series of different projects to highlight the power of a public blockchain.” The New York Times toured ...
